Leather Care

Here are some simple tips to follow when taking care of your leather products:

  • Treat the leather immediately after purchase, before use, with a good water repellent or water-resistant product. Water proofing is not always desirable and often unnecessary.
  • Choose leather cleaners that compliment the colour, grain, texture and type of leather product you are maintaining. Look to preserve its natural oils and grease if possible.
  • Apply a "patch test" on a small hidden area of your leather item before you use any new leather treatment product. Wait to see if it discolours the leather. Some cleaning/treatment products may not be suitable for all types of leather.
  • Water resistant products need to be reapplied continually throughout the product lifespan. On average 4 times a year, or more for items used on a daily basis.
  • Keep leather away from inordinate heat or humidity NEVER use a blow dryer on your leather.
  • If your leather item is wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature. Immediately afterwards, treat it with a conditioner and/or water repellent. For soft porous leather it is important to treat the leather as soon as possible, sometimes while it is still wet. Always follow the instructions of your treatment product.
  • Leather is prone to harsh winter climates. Be sure to take extra care of your leather in this season and moisturize/weatherproof it more often.
  • For day-to-day basic cleaning, use a soft damp cloth and gently pat away dust and dirt.
  • Store your leather in a breathable bag, in a dark, cool place. Avoid excessively humid or dry conditions. Keep it away from sunlight and closet light fixtures. Stuff the item to maintain its shape.
  • For major stains and damage, seek a professional leather care specialist.
